Small Business Saturday is a grassroot, non-commercial campaign taking place on the first Saturday of December each year, seeking to promote and expand the trading operations of small businesses. The campaign will celebrate its tenth year of operations in the UK, during which time it has significantly grown year on year encouraging millions to small shop, supporting local business growth.
The charity will embark on a five-week tour in celebrating of their tenth anniversary, visiting twenty-three towns and cities across the UK. The tour will involve live visits, workshops, and mentoring, all of which are designed to promote and highlight small businesses across the country and the constituency.
No one can ignore the significance that small businesses have on the local economy in Bassetlaw. Of the 3,560 small businesses currently registered in Bassetlaw, 3,485 (97.9%) are either small or micro businesses. These businesses are the backbone of our local economy. Whether they employ one person or fifty people, these small businesses provide income for families and generate growth. We all benefit from this.
This is why Small Business Saturday matters so much for our community.
The Government provided substantial support for small business throughout the Coronavirus pandemic. This involved protecting businesses and employees with over £407 billion in economic support including over £100 billion in business loans.
Since the pandemic the Government has continued to roll out its support for small businesses and will do so throughout the cost-of-living crisis. Our recovery from the energy crisis will be driven in large part by the expansion of small businesses, which will further demonstrate their importance.
A new approach has been taken by the Government, focused on a new era of long-term economic growth and support for business. From April 2023 qualifying companies in the UK will be able to raise up to £250,000 in Seed Enterprise Investment, helping up to 2,000 companies across the UK each year.
Many EU regulations will be repealed by the end of 2023, incentivising departments to review or replace retained EU law. In taking the full advantages of Brexit, this will restore the primacy of UK, growth the economy and liberate British business. Therefore, the Government has delivered and will continue to deliver on the promises made in the 2019 general election.
