Today Councillor Keith Girling from Nottinghamshire County Council and I met with Nuclear Minister Andrew Bowie and attended the formal launch of Midlands Nuclear. This brings together the supply chain, developers, generators, researchers and skills providers interested or already operating in nuclear technologies here in the Midlands.
As highlighted in the Midlands Engine’s recent report on nuclear, the Midlands already hosts a burgeoning nuclear industry and a rapidly growing regional investment base, with investment in nuclear-related sectors in the Midlands growing 23% between 2017/18 and 2019/20 to £2.5bn. Over the same period, the report found regional growth in the sector was 29%, compared to just 2.9% nationally.
The Midlands Nuclear reception showcased some of this existing Midlands expertise and offered an opportunity for those involved in nuclear technologies to network, meet with regional politicians and policy makers, and to reaffirm their commitment to the development of the nuclear sector in the Midlands.
