When I was first elected in 2019, it was part of a wave of optimism and came on the back of a historic 80 seat majority gained by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. I was immensely proud to become the Member of Parliament for Bassetlaw and whilst no politician will be able to please all of the people all of the time, I will always do my very best.
Nobody could have predicted what would come next, and the Covid-19 pandemic has completely changed the economic landscape we face. In Bassetlaw I am very pleased that we have managed to attract over £17 million for Bassetlaw Hospital, £3.5 million for the Skills Hub, as well as extra money for policing and flood defences. The next task will be to secure £20 million for the town centre, which in turn will also help us to build on the investment we have already seen.
On top of this, we finally managed to get Brexit done. I will forever be grateful to Boris Johnson for what he has achieved and for the time he has spent on local issues whenever I have tried to bend his ear over our needs in Bassetlaw. It is with great sadness that I see him now depart as our Prime Minister. I supported him until the very end I am disappointed that others were not able to do so.
But this country now needs to move forwards together and to do that it is vital that the next Prime Minister we choose is the right one. That’s why I’m backing Liz Truss.
Liz has a clear Conservative plan for the country and economy that will deliver immediate cost of living support for people and create the growth we need to avoid a recession - getting us through the tough times ahead and unleashing Britain’s full potential. Our fundamental principle as Conservatives is helping people keep more of their own money – pursuing a strategy of low taxes and high growth, not Gordon Brown-style handouts.
Liz would take immediate action to put more money into people’s pockets - by reversing the National Insurance tax hike and introducing a one year pause on green energy levies to bring down energy bills.
She has my full support and I know she shares my ambition of a country that works for everyone.
