This week there was an urgent question on the future of Derby County Football Club, a founder member of the Football League, back in 1888.
As a Notts County supporter, who were fellow founder members and have had financial problems themselves in the past, I can empathise with their plight. We have also seen local clubs in Bassetlaw on the brink, most recently Worksop Town, another historic club.
Whilst governance of individual clubs is clearly an issue - and indeed always has been - there are questions that need to be answered by the EFL and I think most will agree that the financial fair play rules and situation with points deductions recently have been farcical.
I made the point to the Minister that rules need to be clear and then applied not only in a reasonable timeframe, but also equally.
That’s why I am pleased to discuss further the review into how football is governed.
In the meantime I wish Derby County and their supporters the best of luck in saving the club.
